Thousands of fans packed into Madrid’s Callao Square on Monday as Spain arrived home to a hero’s welcome after winning the Eurobasket title for the second consecutive time.
Led by inspirational captain and tournament MVP Juan Carlos Navarro as well as the likes of Los Angeles Lakers centre Pau Gasol the Spaniards confirmed their European dominance with a 98-85 win over France in Sunday’s final in Lithuania.
Gasol said “this team is wonderful, it is a privileged to play with these players, the staff we have and with these supporters that love us and admire us. Thanks to all of you for making this moment so special and unforgettable.”
The impressive victory in the final capped off a fantastic run for Spain who ended the tournament with an impressive record of ten wins and one defeat.
Having also won the world title in 2006 the thing missing from the trophy cabinet is Olympic gold.
The team’s sights now firmly fixed on London 2012.
