Palestinians have demonstrated at a West Bank checkpoint to voice their support for an expected Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations this week.
Envoys from the United Nations, the EU, the United States and Russia will meet in New York later today to discuss the move.
The EU is split on the Palestinian bid to become the 194th UN member and has yet to decide how it will act.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says the step will not “end the occupation” but would strengthen his hand in talks with Israel. He will present his plan to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who will then pass it on to the Security Council.
The United States has said it will veto any statehood resolution.
