Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told his cabinet that the Palestinians’ UN bid for statehood will never succeed.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas heads for New York this week, to ask the General Assembly to grant membership.
Netanyahu is also going to the US. He told ministers that peace will only come through direct negotiations.
“My US trip has a twin objective,” he said. “Firstly, to make sure that the Palestinians’ attempt to avoid talks will be blocked at Security Council level. And secondly, to present the Israeli case to the UN General Assembly, the desire for peace and the fact that the Jewish people have rights dating back 4,000 years.”
Diplomats from the UN, EU, US and Russia will meet in New York later in a last-ditch attempt to relaunch peace talks and avoid a showdown at the UN.
