After 10 years in power, Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit looks set to lead the SPD to victory again in this Sunday’s state elections.
Only a year ago many thought he was finished, facing a strong Green challenge, but Klaus Wowereit has bounced back in the polls.
Despite Chancellor Angela Merkel offering her support, polls suggest the CDU candidate does not have much of a chance. They are fighting with Greens’ joint national leader Renate Künast for second place.
Wowereit may form a coalition with the Greens and provide a model for a future German government, boosting his chances of leading the party into the 2013 general election.
