Mideast quartet meets over Palestinian statehood bid

Amid mounting tension, Palestinians have held a demonstration at a West Bank checkpoint in support of a statehood bid at the United Nations.

This as envoys from the so-called quartet of Middle East negotiators say they will meet on Sunday in a last ditch effort to get Israeli-Palestinian peace talks restarted.

The quartet comprises the UN, the EU, the US and Russia.

The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has brushed off pressure from the US and the European Union who want him to drop the statehood bid.

They argue that only a negotiated solution with Israel is possible and the UN move will be counter-productive.

But those demonstrating in support of Abbas’ plan say he must not give in to the diplomatic pressure.
