Defending champions South Africa survived a scare at this year’s rugby world cup in New Zealand when they were pushed all the way by an unlucky Wales side before coming through 17-16 in their Pool D opener – The springboks are second behind Fiji who earned a bonus point for four tries against Namibia.

Two-times champions Australia overcame a sluggish start to overpower Italy 32-6 in their first match of pool C – while Ireland laboured to a 22-10 victory over the United States.
