Clashes in Libya ahead of surrender deadline

Further clashes have broken out between pro-Gaddafi forces and opposition fighters near the city of Sirte. This came one day before an opposition deadline for the pro-Gaddafi troops to surrender expires.

The city of Bani Walid is another major pro-Gaddafi bastion, the scene of a stalemate for days now. Forces are massing on both sides while negotiations continue.

One opposition fighter said: “I think we will enter with force, because it seems they really don’t want to negotiate.”

A convoy of pro-Gaddafi officials, including a top general, this week fled Libya for Niger, and there has been speculation that Gaddafi himself may try to go there.

But efforts are being stepped up to find the former dictator and his sons, with Interpol issuing international arrest warrants.
