Iran begins producing nuclear power

world news

| |

Iran has announced its first nuclear power plant at Bushehr has been connected to the national electricity grid.

Tehran says it is now contributing around 60 megawatts of power in the testing phase, and will produce around 400 megawatts of its 1000 megawatt capacity by the end of next week.

Construction of the much-delayed plant by German companies began in 1975, stopped in 1979 and resumed in 1995 when Russian companies took over the project. Russia now provides the nuclear fuel and entirely operates the plant, although operation will become Iran’s responsibility within two to three years when it has trained enough specialist staff.
