Turkey has imposed diplomatic sanctions against Israel, including the exclusion of top embassy staff, over an Israeli raid on an aid flotilla heading to Gaza. The Turkish foreign minister announced the measures in response to revelations from a UN report that says while Israel’s blockade of Gaza is legal it had used unreasonable force.
Ankara said high-ranking personnel will be repatriated by Wednesday. Israel’s ambassador is currently in his home country and has cancelled plans to return.
Nine Turkish pro-Palestinain activists were killed when Israeli forces boarded several boats as they sailed towards Gaza in May 2010. Israel said its soldiers were forced to defend themselves after being attacked.
