Day one of Europe’s biggest street party went off successfully with the majority of the million visitors there just to enjoy the sights.
Sunday was “Children’s Day” at the Notting Hill Carnival in London which is a celebration of Caribbean culture.
But this year’s event is under the spotlight after riots earlier this month shocked the country.
Tension between police and some youngsters was evident as stop and search techniques were enforced but the police claim they are necessary to prevent trouble.
More than 5,500 police officers were on duty – an extra thousand will swell their ranks today when the biggest crowds are expected, taking advantage of a public holiday.
With the London Olympics less than a year away, the capital’s police force needs to restore faith in its ability to ensure security at major events.
But organisers say a balance must be maintained so as not to dampen the carnival’s flamboyant spirit.
