Ireland’s Daniel Martin claimed his first Grand Tour stage win of his career on Sunday by beating the bunch to stage Eight honours in the Tour of Spain.
The days action saw the riders tackle 179.5km of bumpy terrain to Sierra de Bejar which boasted this editions first real summit finish.
It’s at that point Martin made his move on the pack – his pace was relentless and some title contendors fell by the wayside including Joaquim Rodriguez who entered the day as overall race leader as well as defending champion Vincenzo Nibali who failed to keep up.
Meanwhile 25-year-old Martin powered through the final seven kilometres and crossed the line ahead of Bauke Mollema whose second place finish saw the Dutchman take the overall race lead from Rodriguez.
Juan Jose Cobo of Spain was three seconds adrift in third while Britain’s Bradley Wiggens was fourth a second further back.
Overall Mollema has a slender one second lead over Rodriguez with Nibali nine seconds off the pace. Martin meanwhile moves up to 12th at 55 seconds
