Palestinians prevented from attending Friday prayers in Jerusalem have clashed with Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint north of the city.
West Bank Palestinians under the age of 50 have been forbidden from attending the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s old city. The last Friday in the month of Ramadan, is one of the most important in the Islamic calendar.
Organisers of the demonstration said the protest was aimed at challenging Israel’s right to deny access to Jerusalem.
Thousands of Muslims were allowed through but security was tight with papers being scrupulously inspected and some people searched.
Israeli authorities said they feared disturbances following recent tensions in Gaza.
Officials at the Mosque said the attendance was around 250,000, half the normal figure.
