Bloomberg warns New Yorkers over Hurricane Irene

It has been battering the Bahamas and now Hurricane Irene has the Big Apple in her sights.

With the US east coast potentially in Irene’s path, New York City’s mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging residents in low-lying areas to move out.

“New Yorkers should prepare themselves by stocking up on basic supplies and making what is called a ‘go bag’, a bag that you can take with you at a moment’s notice if you have to leave your homes,” he said.

Flooding from category 3 storm Irene has killed at least three people in the Caribbean.

As people move to safety, the governors of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York have declared emergencies.

The US east coast has already been rocked by an earthquake, earlier this week.
