Once the fighting is over, Libya’s rebels need funds to start the mammoth task of rebuilding the country.
At a meeting in Doha they called on members of the Libyan Contact Group to provide aid by the end of the month to help pay for immediate essentials.
France is also seeking a new United Nations resolution to unlock billions of euros-worth of frozen Libyan assets. The Gaddafi regime’s worldwide wealth was restricted once the rebel uprising began.
In Paris on Wednesday, President Nicolas Sarkozy met the National Transitional Council’s leader Mahmoud Jibril to pledge continuing support both militarily and financially.
He also promised to set up a further international meeting on September 1 to discuss Libyan funding.
