Japan shines again in Paris

Japan’s Aiko Sato held her nerve to edge out Brazil’s Rafaela Silva and secure the under 57 kilo title at the World Judo Championships in Paris on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old dominated her opponent from the outset and scored an outstanding ippon with a perfect inner-thigh throw to make sure of the win.

And while Sato was delighting the French crowd her compatriot Misato Nakamura was also proving too strong in the under 52 kilo category.

With only a few seconds to go before the end of the contest, Nakamura scored a yuko and then defended well to secure the title.

Riki Nakaya ensured Japan topped the medals table going into the third day as he outclassed Dex Elmont from the Netherlands in the under 73 kilo category.

France’s Ugo Legrand and Uzbekistan’s Navruz Jurakobilov both had to settle for bronze.

The championships end on 28 August.
