Benghazi hails ‘end’ of Gaddafi regime

Libyans in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi have been celebrating what they see as the collapse of the Muammar Gaddafi regime.

They gathered in the city’s Courthouse Square on Wednesday after opposition fighters managed to seize the Libyan leader’s Tripoli compound.

One resident had a message for Gaddafi, telling him the rebels would undo the damage he inflicted upon their country. “Gaddafi, you destroyed Libya over 42 years. We, the youth of Benghazi, Tripoli and Misrata, promise to rebuild it within 42 months. That is my vow,” the young man said.

Even though Gaddafi and his sons have not yet been captured, the rebels and their supporters are confident that the family are history and that they no longer control the country.
