New York prosecutors give up on DSK sex case

Prosecutors in New York have formally asked for all sex charges against the former head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn to be dismissed.

Hotel chambermaid Nafissatou Diallo alleged he attacked her in May. The District Attorney’s initial vigorous pursuit of the case changed after finding discrepancies in her statements. Her legal team are furious.

Diallo’s lawyer Kenneth Thompson said “If the Manhattan District Attorney, who is elected to protect our mothers, our daughters, our sisters, our wives and loved ones is not going to stand up for them when they are raped or sexually assaulted, who will?”

After a court hearing on Tuesday Dominique Strauss-Kahn should be free to leave the US again. There is even talk he could re-enter French politics.

But his troubles are by no means completely over. He is still facing a civil case brought by Diallo in the US and similar sexual accusations levelled at him in France by a young writer.
