Rebels close in on Gaddafi's Tripoli stronghold

Who controls what in Libya? Amid fierce fighting, it is still unclear whether rebels have, as they claim, seized control of two key coastal cities.

The government denies it has lost Zawiyah west of Tripoli and Zlitan to the east. But, as casualties mount on both sides after six months of war, the frontline is undeniably moving closer to the capital.

Rebels have seized Zawiyah’s oil refinery which supplied government troops with fuel. Full control of the city would cut Tripoli off from its main link road to the outside world. All of Brega is now also in opposition hands, it is being claimed, although this is unconfirmed.

In another blow for Colonel Gaddafi, rebels announced that his ex-right-hand man Abdel Salam Jalloud had defected. And reports say Libya’s oil chief Omran Abukraa has failed to return from a trip abroad.
