Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Madrid on Thursday for a four-day visit.
His plane touched down just before noon local time at the city’s main airport, where he was met by members of the Spanish royal family.
The pontiff is in the Spanish capital as part of a six-day youth event.
His trip will culminate with an open air mass on Sunday.
The gathering known as World Youth Day is being attended by Catholics from across the globe including thousands of bishops, archbishops, cardinals and priests.
Except for a trip Friday to a historic monastery in El Escorial, 50 kilometres northwest of Madrid, the Pope will spend the whole visit in the Spanish capital.
He will meet with young people, hear confession from some of them and ride through the city in his Pope-mobile.
