Syria: Thousands flee Palestinian refugee camp says UN

Reports from residents are growing more alarming on day three of a Syrian military assault against the coastal city of Latakia.

It is claimed many people have been rounded up in a sports stadium. According to the UN, a Palestinian refugee camp has come under fire and thousands there have fled.

Activists claim at least three people were killed on Monday, bringing to 31 the number of deaths in a sea and land operation that started on Saturday.

Syria’s official state news agency has denied that Latakia was shelled from the sea. The US State Department said on Monday that it was unable to confirm published reports that the Syrian navy had shelled the port city.

But the diplomatic heat is rising. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said military action against civilians must end immediately and unconditionally, warning President Assad that these are Ankara’s ‘“final words”.
