Google to buy Motorola Mobility

The world’s biggest search engine Google is to buy US mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility for just over 8.5 billion euros.

Analysts say that far more important to Google than the phone side of the business is Motorola’s wide range of patents which will strengthen Google’s hand in its cut-throat competition with smartphone rival Apple.

However, with the purchase, Google risks alienating other smart phone makers who currently license the Android operating system which Google developed.

They will be concerned that the merger will give Motorola an unfair advantage.
