Two explosions in the central Iraqi city of Kut killed at least 30 people and wounded at least 40 others, agencies reported on Monday.

The car bomb and roadside blast happened in a crowded central area of the city, which is 160 kilometers south of Baghdad.

Violence in Iraq has fallen sharply since the aftermath of the US-led invasion, but insurgents are increasingly targeting local security forces.

The last American troops will withdraw from the country at the end of the year.
