Istanbul has thrown its hat into the ring to host the 2020 summer Olympics.
According to officials a rapidly growing economy, strength to overcome the global economic crisis and ongoing investments in sports facilities and international organizations, makes the largest city in Turkey the ideal candidate to host the planet’s biggest sporting event.
The country will hoping it is fourth time lucky after three previous failed attempts at hosting the games. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said: “We are excited, since we believe that we will reach our goal this time.
‘‘We are a candidate, because we really understand sporting values and the Olympic soul which have a strong effect and high contribution to world peace,” he added.
Istanbul has now joined Rome, Tokyo and Madrid is bidding for the event in eight years time, with Doha and Durban also considering joining the fray.
Potential hosts have until September 1 to announce their bids with the IOC naming the winner on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires.
