In a rare rebuke for Pakistan’s powerful army, a court has sentenced a soldier to death for shooting an unarmed civilian dead in June.
Five fellow Ranger paramilitaries and a civilian involved in the incident were given life sentences. The men were also fined more than 6,000 euros, which will go to the dead man’s family.
The incident, which took place in Karachi, was captured on video. Its broadcast shocked the nation just days after the Pakistani army’s image had been tarnished by the discovery of Osama bin Laden living in the heart of a military town, and a spectacular Taliban attack on a supposedly impregnable naval base.
