A massive policing operation is being mounted across England in preparation for another possible night of rioting and looting.
An inquiry into the shooting of Mark Duggan, 29, which sparked the unrest, has found he did not open fire on officers.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said ballistic test results showed “at this stage there is no evidence that the handgun found at the scene was fired during the incident.”
A 26-year-old man has become the first fatality of the disturbances. The victim died after being shot in his car in Croydon.
The south London town was hit hard in Monday night’s trouble. Violence exploded too in other parts of London such as Clapham, Ealing, Peckham and Enfield as the Metropolitan Police were swiftly overrun.
Rampaging gangs also wreaked havoc and destruction in other cities, including Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool.
