England's friendly called off

England’s friendly international against the Netherlands at Wembley on Wednesday has been called off due to the widespread rioting in London.

Following discussions with police, the Football Association chairman David Bernstein chose to cancel the fixture as the safety of players and fans could not be guaranteed.

Only three weeks before the Netherlands resume their Euro 2013 qualifying campaign against San Marino, Dutch midfielder Mark Van Bommel said he was disappointed but not surprised by the decision.

Tuesday’s friendly between Nigeria and Ghana at Vicarage Road in Watford has also been called off.
