Protesters reclaim symbolic Madrid square

Tens of thousands of Spanish demonstrators from the “Indignado” movement have marched back into Puerto del Sol in the centre of Madrid.

Police had prevented the protesters from returning to the plaza since last Tuesday when it was cleared, resulting in violent clashes on Thursday with police in other parts of the city.

Speaking for the group, Sandra Ruperez said:

“Sol symbolises the start of a new awakening in Spain, in which people unite, in which people call for social improvements. People are demanding their rights, rights that they had already gained but which are being taken from them.”

The movement is protesting about the crisis in Spain, the for which they think ordinary people, particularly the young, are paying too high a price.
