Supporters of the jailed Ukrainian former prime minister are promising to step up their protest over her detention.
Yulia Tymoshenko is being held in contempt of court after refusing to rise for the judge during her trial for abuse of office. She was led from the courtroom after being accused of “systematically” disrupting the proceedings. Her supporters, who claim the trial is politically motivated, have now received a significant boost.
One of Ukraine’s best-known and most popular athletes, WBC world heavyweight boxing champion, Vitali Klitschko, ,says he will delay his title defence next month to draw attention to her plight.
The boxer criticised her arrest, reportedly describing it as a serious blow to a country that says it promotes democracy.
Hundreds of people have already set up tents outside the jail where Tymoshenko is being held and organisers say they are planning a protest in Kiev on Monday to demand her release.
