Polar bear kills tourist in Norway

In Norway one person is dead and another five injured after a polar bear attacked a group of tourists from Britain.

It happened on Friday on the Artic island of Spitsbergen, in the Svalbard region at the edge of the Von Post Glacier some 40 km east of the area’s main town, Longyearbyen.

The injured were taken by helicopter to hospital after the authorities were informed of the attack by

satellite telephone in the early hours of the morning.

The polar bear was shot dead.

A renowned polar bear habitat, Svalbard is about halfway between Norway’s mainland and the North Pole.
