Milan ready themselves for Super Cup derby

As Serie A players threaten to delay the start of the new season one game that will not be affected by a potential strike is this weekend’s Italian Super Cup held in Beijing.

Thousands of fans flocked to the Birds Nest Stadium to watch Italian champions AC Milan train on Wednesday, a few days before their clash with Italian Cup winners and city rivals Inter.

Alessandro Nesta was in confident mood ahead of the game and the season thanks mainly to a series of defensive close-season signings.

“In the second half of the Italian league our rivals only scored seven times against us and not many teams can say the same,’‘ boasted the veteran defender. ‘‘On top of that, this year we are joined by Philippe Mexes, who at the moment is not well but is recovering. We also have Taye Taiwo and Thiago Silva who is a world class player.”

Last season AC Milan were crowned the Serie A champions for the first time in seven years. They finished eight points clear of Inter who had dominated the Scudetto for the past five years.

Saturday’s match in Beijing is the latest instalment of the League’s promotion of Italian football in Asia. And what better way to promote the Italian game and kick-start the new season than with a star-studded Milan derby.
