Gunfire exchanged on Israel-Lebanon border

There has been a brief exchange of gunfire between Israeli and Lebanese soldiers along the border between the two countries.

No injuries were reported but the incident highlights the frontier tensions that linger between Israel and Lebanon.

A Lebanese military source claims an Israeli patrol encroached 30 metres into the Lebanese side of the so-called ‘blue line’ border drawn up by the UN.

The Lebanese are said to have shot at the Israeli troops who returned fire.

The frontier has been quiet but tense since the end of the Lebanon War in 2006, although last August a firefight killed two Lebanese soldiers and a journalist as well as an Israeli officer.
