Crowds of demonstrators thronged the centre of Hama in Syria yesterday. It is the 17th consecutive Friday that people have taken to the streets, to demand an end to President Bashar al-Assad’s 11-year rule. And it was in defiance of an intensifying military crackdown. Syria is off-limits for foreign journalists, so it is difficult to get an accurate impression of the exact situation.
Syrian human rights campaigners say the security forces shot at least 20 civilians dead after demonstrations across the country.
The official Syrian news agency says a police officer was killed in the town of Abu Kamal, and saboteurs bombed an oil export pipeline near the city of Homs.
