It has been a difficult day for Ukraine’s mining industry. Nine miners are still missing after an explosion at a pit in the east of the country.
Relatives have gathered at the surface of the Sukhodilska mine, waiting for news.
At least 16 workers are known to be dead.
Three were injured.
The pit is in the former Soviet republic’s coal mining heartland of Luhansk.
And now news has come in of another accident at a mine in the neighbouring region of Donetsk.
A piece of heavy machinery collapsed at a site near Makeyevka, killing one and injuring eight.
The worst accident in recent years was in 2007, when a methane blast at a nearby mine killed more than 100 people.
