Rough start to Beyreuth

The Bayreuth Festival in the northern Bavarian town in Germany got off to a rocky start. Many aficionados of composer Richard Wagner, to whose works the festival is dedicated, felt it was an inauspicious 100th anniversary.

The VIP audience, greeted with flourish, was largely crestfallen after their red carpet walk. Some were even outraged by opera director Sebastian Baumgarten’s new production of ‘Tannhaeuser’ and particularly the venue chosen.
