A Kosovo policeman seriously injured during a border clash on Monday night has died.

The 31-year-old officer was shot in the head when a police convoy came under fire in a Serb dominated area.

The violence occurred during a botched bid by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian government to take control of two border posts in an ethnic Serb area.

The move was a show of strength aimed at ending rampant smuggling and extend government rule after Pristina banned all Serb products and Serbia responded in kind.

NATO peacekeepers have been in the area to act as a buffer force. EU sponsored talks between Belgrade and Pristina on trade, energy supplies and freedom of movement have had limited results.

But local media in Kosovo report a deal has now been struck to end road blocks and help defuse tensions.
