Uruguay welcomes home newly crowned champions


Thousands of screaming Uruguayan fans flooded into the streets of Montevideo on Monday to celebrate their team’s triumph.

La Celeste earned bragging rights after outclassing Paraguay 3-0 in Buenos Aires on Sunday and this result saw them clinch the Copa America for a record 15th time.

Viviana Presta: ‘‘It’s such a great feeling. Everybody’s smiling right now and I’m so proud of our national team. Look at all the flags here. I’ve never seen anything like this before and I’m 50 years old.’‘

Some 60,000 fans gathered in the historic Centenario stadium at 3 a.m. to welcome the players, who were quick to show their appreciation.

Diego Lugano: ‘‘We have worked so hard for this. We made a lot of sacrifices and we never gave up. Those players did it for you and we just want to thank you for all your support.’‘

A year after finishing fourth in South Africa, Oscar Washington Tabarez’s men have been crowned South American champions giving them a major confidence boost ahead of the World Cup qualifying which kicks off next year.
