A roadside bomb attack has wounded six French soldiers serving with the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon. The front of their troop carrier bore the brunt of the blast.

The incident happened as their vehicle was travelling along the coastal road near the southern city of Sidon.

Three of the soldiers were taken to hospital, one of them in a serious condition. Most are said to have sustained wounds to their faces and hands.

France currently has a 1,600 strong contingent in a UN mission set up to monitor Lebanon’s border with Israel.
