Australia’s Cadel Evans has seized the Tour de France leader’s yellow jersey after a thrilling penultimate stage in Grenoble on Saturday.
The two-time runner-up held his nerve to overcome a 57-second deficit to Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck in the time trial, all but securing the first victory by an Australian in the Tour.
Evans eventually came second as Germany’s Tony Martin produced a fantastic run to complete the race in an impressive time of 55:33.
Three-time Tour champion Alberto Contador was unable to trouble the leading pair and had to settle for third place.
Evans now leads Andy Schleck by 1:34 going into Sunday’s final parade to the Champs Elysées in Paris.
