The sitting of MPs questioning Rupert Murdoch and his son James over phone hacking was briefly suspended after an attempted physical attack on the media tycoon.

A man has been arrested after lunging at the 80 year old with a plate apparently containing shaving foam. He is reported to have shouted “greedy”.

It is thought he had been in the public gallery.

Murdoch’s wife swiftly intervened to combat the attacker and he was removed from the room by police.

Murdoch was unhurt; his son reportedly said he was surprised and angered at the security failure.

The sitting which had already lasted more than two hours then restarted after 15 minutes.

The alleged aggressor is said to be an actor who had been commenting on the hearing on his Twitter account.
