Japan have won the women’s World Cup in Frankfurt after a stunning win over the much fancied United States on penalties.
The game had everything the United States twice took the lead thanks to goals by Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach’s extra-time header.
Twice the Japanese got back into the match with goals by Aya Miyama and a late, late equaliser by Homare Sawa.
The US capitulated on penalties missing their first three spot kicks and Japan came away 3-1 winners to become the first Asian side to lift the trophy.
