Germany in Putin prize u-turn

Officials in Germany reversed a decision on Saturday to award Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin the prestigious Quadriga prize.

Plans to honour the ex KGB officer for “enlightenment, dedication and the public good” were attacked by the public and media.

Many German politicians blamed Putin’s human rights record for the u-turn.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former Czech president Vaclav Havel have won the award in the past.
