Colonel Muammar Gaddafi hit out at American recognition of the Libyan rebel council on Saturday, rejecting reports he was set to leave the country.

Gaddafi told Libyan state television that the rebels were “worthless traitors” and that he had no plans to step down.

In Libya’s western mountains, insurgents clashed with government forces as fighting intensified.

The rebels claim they forced a convoy of Gaddafi’s troops and vehicles to turn and flee after a sustained attack lasting over an hour.

In Benghazi’s Jalaa hospital, there was evidence of a surge in fighting in the east. Reports indicate at least ten rebels were killed and over 170 injured in an attack on the oil port of Brega.

Its claimed the rebels captured four government soldiers in the battle.
