In Austria, an atheist has been allowed to appear in the photo on his driving licence wearing a pasta strainer on his head.

Nico Alm applied for the licence three years ago.

He donned the sieve in a response to the recognition of confessional headgear in official photographs.

He says he got the idea when he heard only religious headcoverings were allowed. So he joined the “Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monsters” and now calls himself a “Pastafarian”.

Mr Alm had to have a medical to prove he was “psychologically fit” to drive.

Police say his photo was allowed because his face is not obscured in it.
