First rider fails Tour de France dope test

Russian cyclist Alexandr Kolobnev of the Katusha team has been thrown off the Tour de France after failing a drugs test taken during the race’s first week.

He was found to have been using a banned diuretic.

Currently in 69th place, he was the silver medallist at the World road race championships in 2009, and has been a professional rider since 2002.

The Katusha team is an all-Russian affair this year, the first ever, after taking part in 2009 and 2010 with a mixture of Russian riders and international stars.
