The Taliban is claiming responsibility for the killing of the younger brother of Afghan president Hamid Karzai.
Ahmad Wali Karzai, was shot dead in his home in Kandahar, reportedly by one of his bodyguards.
Leader of the provincial council of Kandahar Province, Ahmad Wali was considered one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan, who helped shore up his brother’s influence in the volatile region.
But he has also been linked with the country’s booming opium trade, allegations he has denied.
According to a US newspaper, American officials have repeatedly asked Hamid Karzai to move his brother out of Kandahar, saying he is standing in the way of building a just and efficient government.
Ahmad Wali survived an attempt on his life in May 2009.
