The bodies of more than 110 people – including 30 children – are thought to be trapped in the hull of a ship that sank on the River Volga in Russia.

There were 188 passengers and crew on the ‘Bulgaria’ for a two-day cruise when it ran into trouble three kilometres from shore.

An emergency operation was immediately launched.

It is not yet known why it sank – an investigation into the safety record of the 55-year-old vessel is also under way.
