Solo Costa shines in maiden Tour win

At last we have had a successful breakaway in this year’s Tour de France, with Rui Costa from Portugal winning the eighth stage to end the first week in triumph.

He and eight others made a break for the line 30 kilometres from the finish as the pack struggled in hilly terrain, but only Costa could keep up a winning pace to hand his Moviestar team its first- ever Tour win.

The BMC team rode hard all day to try and give leader Cadel Evans a taste of the yellow jersey

and Alexandre Vinokourov also made a bid for the overall lead, but ultimately failed.

Just behind Costa at the line was Phillippe Gilbert, battling to retain the green jersey. Evans was in a group in third place that included Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck.

Overall Thor Hushovdt hangs onto the yellow jersey by just one second after an heroic ride; Franck Schleck moves up into third.
