Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister has quit his position to run for the top job.

Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba plans to succeed Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is not running for a third term.

Amid high unemployment and spending cuts, crunch general elections are expected to be held in the Autumn.
