Dalai Lama in Washington visit

Republican and Democrat leaders in the US have met with Tibetan spiritual leader The Dalai Lama at the Capitol.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Speaker John Boehner paid tribute to the Nobel Peace laureate.

The White House has yet to confirm whether the 76 year old, who’s in Washington for an eleven day Buddhist ritual, will meet with President Obama.

The House meeting comes despite opposition from China, which regards the Dalai Lama as a separatist troublemaker and are touchy about any official recognition of the exiled Tibetan leader.

The Dalai Lama denies seeking independence for Tibet, saying he wants autonomy for the region within China.
