Suspended sentence for 'defaming' Lukashenko

A journalist for a leading Polish newspaper has been given a suspended sentence for defaming President Alexander Lukashenko.

Andrej Pochubut is a Belarussian citizen and a member of the country’s Polish minority.

He has been in jail since April after criticising Lukashenko over December’s presidential election, condemned by the opposition.

He told reporters that his liberation was the result of pressure on the government.

Poland has criticised the suspended sentence and said it should not be seen as a victory.

At least 140 people have been convicted so far after further opposition protests on Sunday.
